STS-131 Crew Inspects Heat Shield

Tue, 06 Apr 2010 06:02:27 -0500

Instead of downlinking early heat shield inspection data, the space shuttle Discovery crew is recording it on five or six 40-minute tapes that will be downlinked after docking, using the space station Ku-Band system. The Damage Assessment Team review will be delayed, but this issue will not affect the quality of data it reviews.

The shuttle crew will go to sleep at 12:21 p.m. EDT and will awaken at 8:21 p.m. to begin Flight Day 3, docking day. The Space Shuttle Program Mission Management Team meets at 2 p.m. to discuss the status of Discovery and the STS-131 mission. A news briefing will follow the meeting at 5 p.m.

After completing a standard inspection of space shuttle Discovery's heat shield, the shuttle crew goes to sleep at 12:21 p.m. EDT. Due to the Ku-band anomaly, data from the scan was recorded for playback to imagery experts in mission control after Discovery docks to the International Space Station. The Mission Management Team (MMT) meets at 2 p.m., and NASA TV will air a post-MMT news conference at 5 p.m.
